For SecondLife residents only, I’ve setup a box giver at the Fabjectory Shop in Theta. The box contains a 1 SecondLife Meter to 10 millimeter template of a USB memory stick case. It’s designed to fit Kingston Data Traveler models, but will likely work for others as well.
You can use the creation tools of SecondLife to modify the template objects to create your own custom USB thumb drive case.
Once you get it completed, IM: Hal9k Andalso in-world. I’ll make sure that the model can be fabricated and you’ll be billed via PayPal.
Prices:
- If only textures are added to the memory drive case, the cost is $50 US (+ shipping).
- If prims are added (to make legs or whatever) the price will be between $50 to $100 US.
If you have any questions about it, let me know at mike [at] fabjectory.com
Thanks!
Beyond Avatars

We’ve been having fun struggling with the first batch of avatars. I’ll save it for another post, but there are MASSIVE differences in complexity and work between avatars. In the prototypes, I thought I was pushing things with finely detailed tattoos, etc. Turns out the real test is avatars sporting 1000+ prims on their bodies (argh).
As other, more talented people than me are working on that, I was able to take the first small step towards the production of non-avatar products. I created a template within SecondLife for a USB Memory Drive case (picture below).
This will shortly be freely available within SecondLife for any creative person who wants one. Residents will be able to add wings to it, big gnarly gears, different textures, whatever they like to create their own super custom designer USB Drives.
Anyone interested in getting an advance copy to play around with or if you just have some ideas for other stuff, email me at mike [at] fabjectory.com.
Thanks!

I’m back from getting married, which means that I’ve left the house on the beach in favor of returning home and doing work (sigh). If you’ve attempted to get hold of me the past week and failed, please blame my new wife and bear with me as I catch up on everything.

I was able to check two items off my list to do list today:
-
Post new pictures to the Gallery. The pictures of 3PointD’s Walker Spaight. He’s been nice enough to chronicle the process of creating the avatar on the site and you should check it out if you’re interested in getting a figure done yourself.
The avatar also contains two things that we hadn’t done before: prim hair and a grass colored base. Walker’s prim hair was short and essentially glued to his head (no, or very few gaps between head and individual pieces of hair). Since this was the case, we gave it a try and it came out great. You can really see the individual locks.
The grass base is just another texture put on instead of the default plywood. I’m going to put together a number of different base textures that people can choose from as it also looked pretty cool.
- A number of people have approached me asking if we’d create non-avatar statuettes. The answer is a wholehearted “yes!”. They immediately then ask: how much will it cost to get their “Superfun Couch of Tartan Textures” or “Wicked Ninja 5000 automobile” created.
I’d launch into this description of how blah blah effected cost and blah blah too, so instead of repeatedly doing that, I posted a new page that describes how we do custom models and the factors that predict how much it will be to create.
Maybe I’ll get some more items completed tomorrow.
Anyone with suggestions, ideas or anything else, please email me at mike [at] fabjectory.com.
Thanks!

I added a few more entries to the FAQ to address some questions I’ve had over the last couple days.
I’ve also changed up the ordering process as it was just poorly thought out on my part previously.
Old Process:
- Pay us money
- Get Something
New Process
- You checkout our avatar preparation guidelines.
- We meet in-world to capture the geometry and textures of your avatar
- After the capture, we tweak the model, retexture the figure and send you pictures of it from our 3d Applications as a more realistic view of what the figure would look like.
- If you approve of the figure, we bill you via Paypal and build your figure.
I’m still putting together a web form / scheduling something to allow people to set times to meet in world (hoping I can hijack some Web 2.0 company our maybe Google calendar to do this for me).
If anyone has any other questions about the process or anything at all really, you can email me at mike [at] fabjectory.com.
Thanks!

Fabject + Factory

This should probably be in the FAQ and I’ll paste it over there when I get a chance, but some people have asked me what’s the name “Fabjectory” mean.
Basically, it was Fabject + Factory
“Fabject” was coined by Bruce Sterling to describe the type of everyday objects that were being created with the scientific and engineering rapid manufacturing tools that were coming into more common use the last couple years.
